The pristine Twin Lakes are located on the southeast slope of Mammoth Mountain in Mono County. Residing in the Inyo National Forest, this alpine glacial lake is nestled in the Mammoth Lake Basin of the Sierra Nevadas.
How To Get There
Twin Lakes is located 3 miles from Mammoth Lakes Village. Follow Mary Rd. toward the Old Mammoth Lake District. The Twin Lakes campground and resort are just past the pack station. To observe the lake from the overlook, continue straight on Mary Rd. until you arrive at the junction for Mary Lake. There is ample off-road parking to catch a glimpse of the Brink of Twin Falls and the entire basin.
Hiking and biking trails connect the entire area of Twin Lakes, Mary Lake, George Lake and Horseshoe Lake. Most trails are paved and fairly flat to ride or hike.
This bridge crosses over the flowage from Mary Lake, which tumbles down into Upper Twin Lake at the Brink of Twin Falls Overlook.
The elevation of Twin Lakes is 8,540 feet. This is quite high for an average lake, however, it is actually the lowest lake in the entire Mammoth Lakes Basin.
The Brink of the cascading Falls shoots down into Upper Twin Lake.
Noteworthy fact; Twin Lakes is actually three lakes, not two. Therefore, ideally the name should really be Trilogy Lakes.
Kayaking, Stand Up Paddleboarding, Boating and Fishing are common attractions for all of the Mammoth Lakes recreation areas.
The lava cliff on the left side of the lake (as shown above) was caused by an eruption from the now extinct Mammoth Mountain Volcano. The opposite shore features a campground, pack station and resort. The nearby Mammoth Mountain Resort offers lodging, restaurants, skiing, mountain biking, hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.
