The Root Chakra
Muladhara Chakra 1, the energy of compression, is the creative force of the universe. The Root Chakra creates a vortex that pulls particles together like building blocks to manifest the earth element. Muladhara is also known as the “Tribal” or “Ancestral” Chakra because it holds our life force energy which comes from our genetic family.
The Sanskrit name of the Muladhara Chakra 1 is Prithivi. The name means root center because it is literally at the energetic root of your being. It can be felt at the base of your spine, although this energy can be felt in every cell of your body. We can visualize the nervous system as the roots through which we draw energy from the body into the chakra realm.
ELEMENT = Earth
The earth element is the primary force in material creation. The force of gravitation is a strong binding power that holds together the physical components of the universe. This dynamic force is always influencing us on the outside, but it also affects us on an internal level.
Chakra 1 Balance & Flow
When the energy in the Root Chakra is flowing and balanced, we feel grounded and confident. It promotes a feeling of security and an overall sense of well being. We do not feel scattered, on the contrary, we have a strong connection with the world around us. Our material goals are focused and we don’t mind working work towards what we want to achieve.
Muladhara Chakra 1 Imbalances
While the Root Chakra is vital to finding much needed balance in our hectic lives, when this energy center is out of balance, many maladies can occur. The heavy gravitational force of the root chakra can make us feel depressed and lethargic when it is out of balance. In addition, you may feel stuck, lazy or resistant to change. We are overly possessive and healthy self-confidence turns into self-centeredness. The inner strength we possess instead turns into defensiveness and we begin to build a wall around us socially.

Chakra 1 Weakness
Our stability and inner strength are depleted when there is a lack of energy in the Muladhara Chakra 1. We may feel that we have lost our footing or that the “rug has been swept out from under us.” Typically, when the Root Chakra energy is weak, we become very uncomfortable in our own skin. We may not want to be here at all anymore, likewise, we tend to lack concentration and are prone to daydreaming. Fear of our own survival in society and self-doubts assail the mind. In addition, we are physically weak and lack endurance. We would rather “think” or contemplate about doing something rather than actually doing it.
Planes of Existence
Your physical body is your first chakra, every single cell in your body is a manifestation of the three dimensional plane we characterize as the earth element. The energy center of Muladhara Chakra 1 is near the tailbone, therefore a grounding yoga practice of seated yoga poses is very beneficial to connect you with your own solidity. Be mindful that the energy of the Root Chakra moves downward and is felt also in the feet. If the energy of Chakra 1 is too strong and needs to be dispersed, then look to arm balances and standing inversion yoga poses.
Healing Crystal for Chakra 1
- Carnelian (red)
- Garnet (red & green)
- Tourmaline (black)
- Tiger Eye
- Jasper (red)
- Smoky Quartz
The color of the Root Chakra is red. If you have a craving for red accent colors in your home decor, jewelry, accessories, clothing or even your car- then your Root Chakra is probably out of balance. This means that you need more grounding in your life because you crave the red color of the Root Chakra. Seeing this color gives you a sense of being secure, whether you realize it or not. Listen to your cravings in life for the subtle things that your senses bring to your awareness like colors, smells, and food cravings. On the flip side, if you have a strong aversion to the color red then you are most likely way too grounded.
Physiological Connections to the Root Chakra
- Muscle & Bone
- Red Blood Cells (Hemoglobin)
- Large Intestine (Colon)

- Reproductive Organs (Testicles & Ovaries)
Healing Essential Oils for the Root Chakra

Muladhara Chakra 1 Yoga Poses
When the Root Chakra is out of balance, it means that energy is “stuck” or not flowing properly through this energy channel. A variety of negative thoughts, emotions and trauma can block energy in the Root Chakra. When energy is stuck for a prolonged period of time, we will start to manifest “dis-ease” and pain on the physical level. It may start out as tightness in the hips. Before you know it, you are having chronic low back pain. As the years go by and you ignore the symptoms, now you have a herniated disc in the lumbar spine or spinal stenosis. These physical symptoms actually started on an energetic level.
As a general rule of thumb, all hip opening yoga poses called “Hip Openers” help us to start releasing stuck energy in the Root Chakra. Any pose that helps to stretch the low back, hamstrings, psoas or glutes are perfect to clear blocked energy in Muladhara Chakra 1.
If you find that you have chronic pain, discomfort or tightness in the hips, glutes or low back then you need to start paying attention. It’s not fun to think about why we are out of alignment mentally, physically or energetically. However, if we ignore the symptoms, we will continue to suffer on every level.
The Root Chakra is our “tribal or ancestral” chakra because it is where we store our life force energy. This energy is from our parents, grandparents and all who came before them. Often times, when we are manifesting chronic hip or low back issues, there is something going on with a family member. It could be a fight you had with a sibling from a decade ago of which you never made amends. In a similar sense, it could be a past or current divorce, marital separation, or problems with children. Perhaps it is broken lines of communication between you and your parents or other family members.
Taking initiative to really look introspectively at the “root” cause of the issue is the way to solve the blocked energy of the Root Chakra. There is probably a lot of hurt, negative emotions and fear that need to be released before you can move on. This process is never easy but running away or hiding from it will only cause more disease to manifest itself in your body. Now is the time to do something whether it involves forgiveness or making amends. If pain has manifested itself on the physical level due to avoiding these issues- that’s an indication that you have already waited too long.
If you don’t know where to start and feel like you need a mentor or “hands-on” approach to tackling these issues- we recommend trying one of our Therapeutic Yoga or Chakra Yoga Workshops. Pachamama Yoga offers online courses, along with weekend workshops.
Chakra 1 Yoga Poses
We can’t possibly list them all, however, here are a few classic hip openers that will help to release some of the “stuck” energy in the Root Chakra. Inversions can also benefit when we need to disperse or “unground” ourselves when the energy of the Root Chakra is too strong.
As a side note, we store negative emotions and trauma in the “Yin Tissues” of our body, otherwise known as fascia. Holding these yoga stretches for five minutes (no less) will allow you to get into the Yin tissues and get a true myofascial release. Please note that holding the pose or stretch for only 2 minutes or less will NOT have the same affect.
