The Intention Chakra
Manipura Chakra 3 is the center of motivation whereby we set our intentions and desires. In its raw essence, it represents the celestial fire that burns from within. The liberation of energy in the Manipura Chakra motivates change, action, creativity, and spontaneity. Also known as the “Solar Plexus” or “Willpower” Chakra, this powerful energy center instigates change and transformation.
The Sanskrit meaning of the Manipura Chakra is two-fold. The prefix “mani” translates to gem, while “pura” means city. In Vedic texts, Manipura is often referred to as the “City of Jewels.” Found just below our navel, Chakra 3 is our “Sun Center.” It gives power and action to our physical body and brings light and inspiration to our mind. The lustrous and radiant energy of Manipura radiates down to nourish the chakras below and also rises up to the Anahata “Heart Chakra.”
ELEMENT = Fire
The fire element gives each cell its heat and energy, much like the sun gives our planet warmth and the ability to sustain life. The combustive fire of the Manipura Chakra is literally the energy of combustion and transformation. With this power, matter is changed into energy which we see as light and feel as heat. Taken too far, and without the balance of the other elements, fire in its destructive nature will burn and destroy.
Chakra 3 Balance & Flow
When the power of Manipura is balanced, one achieves their goals, has self-confidence and a strong motivation and sense of direction. With this active energy, people tend to be over-achievers and invoke motivation in others. They are leaders of others and like to take action to make things happen. Their personality reflects a good sense of humor, friendly disposition and generosity. Typically, they possess a strong willpower with a healthy balance of creative intuition.
- Physically active
Chakra 3 Blockages
When the energy of the Manipura Chakra is too strong or out of balance, people can suffer an inflated ego and become very controlling. Likewise, they may come across as bossy, stubborn or aggressive. They have a lack of consideration for others while at the same time they are careless for other people’s feelings. Single-mindedness prevails with a strong connotation for being a “workaholic.” Physically they have a high metabolism and may have difficulty slowing down or relaxing. They display a multitude of scattered creative ideas and are prone to various types of addiction.
- Pleasure loving
Chakra 3 Weakness
A deficiency of energy or weakness in the Manipura Chakra will appear as a lack of motivation or willpower. Mental blocks are accompanied by nervousness and impatience. Those with weakness in the Manipura Chakra have no desire to take action and are stuck in old negative patterns. Physically they suffer fatigue and tiredness and avoid exercise. The depleted energy of this chakra also exudes a lack of confidence and emanates self-doubt. In addition, they are very indecisive and have trouble making any decision of their own volition.
Planes of Existence
From our Solar Plexus comes the energy of daytime activity, vision, creativity and productivity. This fiery energy leads to self-expression and uninhibited action. If suppressed, it will create a negative emotion state with head spinning frustration. Therefore, it is important to keep Chakra 3 in harmony and balance.

Manipura Healing Colors
The color of the Sacral Chakra is yellow. If you have a craving for yellow accent colors in your home decor, jewelry, accessories, clothing or even your car- then your Manipura Chakra is probably depleted. Seeing this color gives you a sense of willpower, whether you realize it or not. Listen to your cravings in life for the subtle things that your senses bring to your awareness like colors, smells, and food cravings. On the flip side, if you have a strong aversion to the color yellow then you most likely have an overabundance of energy in this chakra.

Chakra 3 “The City of Jewels”
The journey of your spiritual being needs sunshine to grow into the reality of the present day. Imagination is one of the faculties empowered by the energy of Chakra 3. In fact, it is one of the most potent tools our mind has to work with. An image held in the mind is an energy pattern and that becomes the directing force for our energy flow. When not used as a tool this imaginative faculty can too easily work against us, creating fantasies and illusions that have little to do with an achievable reality. In yoga the force of imagining is utilized in visualizing positive results in our practice of stretching and healing. The same methods are used to visualize what we want to achieve in the material world, and to imagine how we can attain it.
“Imagination is more important than knowledge.”Albert Einstein
The powerful energy of the Manipura Chakra 3 needs to move, to go somewhere, to do something. If it is not directed by the higher mind, it falls into old behavior patterns from the lower mind automatically and directs your day according to previous programming. This is why it is important on the spiritual path to be up before dawn so as to direct this force in a positive way. Here is the way to create what you want out of yourself and for yourself. It begins by changing those aspects of your daily activities that are not in harmony with your present belief system about how you should be living.
De-Programming Manipura Chakra 3
One of the biggest stumbling blocks to our evolution sits firmly at the top of this chakra. It is called Vishnu Grunthi, and has much to do with habitual behavior. Most of what we learn in a lifetime becomes relegated to an area of the brain called the cerebellum. This small mass of gray matter picks up on the actions we perform and makes an “auto-pilot” function out of them.
This automatic function works out well to our advantage in many ways,
however, once we step onto a spiritual path and need to change our habits it works against us. We have to work more diligently to “de-program” the mind.
One of the methods used to overcome the forces of resistance that hold us back from evolving is a technique called Uddiyana Bandha. It is one of the classic “locks” of yoga and as such tends to lock our energy inward and prevent it from flowing out into these habitual patterns. As mentioned earlier, the grunthis are like knots in which our energy patterns have been tied up. The bandhas are the methods of locking our energy into different internal patterns that are known to enhance our evolution. Once that energy is re-directed to the inside, it no longer gets tangled up in the knots of the outer world.
Pranayama deals with energy control, and is thus intrinsically related to
Manipura Chakra 3 which is all about energy. The solar plexus is our fire center, the area in which we change food into energy. Having control over the direction into which this energy moves is required for the yogic spiritual path. As we have seen with Vishnu Grunthi, habitual patterns of all sorts are tied in with this energy and changing habits require conscious effort. Conscious control over the breathing function is used in pranayama yoga as a method of gaining influence over the way our energy moves.
The Bandhas & Manipura
The three primary bandhas, namely Mula Bandha, Uddiyana Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha help to improve the overall functioning of the physical
body. This is achieved through the inner massage of the internal muscles, glands and organs, activating the circulation of all bodily fluids as well as
stimulating and regulating the nerve groups along the spinal column.
The bandhas help redirect the flow of energy in the body. When these
three primary bandhas are practiced together with mudras, chakra mantras, asanas and pranayama breathing techniques, the higher psychic sense of the practitioner.
The execution of the bandhas begin to release the grunthis (knots of negative energy) along the spinal column. These particular gruntis actually impede the flow of prana through the Sushumna Nadi channel thus
keeping one stuck in old habitual patterns and preventing the ascension of
Kundalini energy. In the release and dissipation of these knots, pranic life
force may move through the sushumna more freely, raising the consciousness of the yoga practitioner.
