Living In the Present Moment
The past rushes in to dull everything. It’s always at work. That’s why most of us are living in the past. Our past memories are always rushing in to jade our perception of the NOW. We always see the past, we never really see what is right here in front of us. This is how we operate in life, we don’t live in the now. It’s our default. We never really see anything anew, we only see our past experiences projected onto the present moment. Even when we encounter a new person or situation, we allow our past experiences to cloud our perception. Consequently, we go through life all alone. We never really see another human being. We just see our past judgement coloring in everyone and everything.
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is an ancient Reiki symbol that infers the meaning:
Only the eternal now
This is the same drama we have in relationships. The littlest thing someone says or does that conflicts with our judgement, we go into all out defense mode. By default, most of us will get angry. The rest of us will hide or avoid the situation. These are all characteristic actions of the Ego. The Ego doesn’t want you to confront anything or to be present. It wants you to run away and stay trapped in the dream.
That’s why it’s so important to become present.
The Past Accumulates
As the past accumulates over time, it grows bigger. We have more and more memories and grievances that we carry. If we do nothing to clean that out- our past starts to weigh us down. It’s a massive burden to carry around all of your past grievances. Pretty soon, it becomes so heavy that you can barely lift it anymore. It takes most of your energy just to carry it around with you everyday, everywhere you go.
Worse yet, we create justifications for our grievances. Every grievance we carry has a special justification around it. We rationalize it to ourselves and justify the fact. People who judge must justify their judgement. On top of carrying around their grievances, now they have to take their judgements around with them too. Otherwise, they forget why they justified the grievance to begin with.
Unreasonable people create reasons why their life can’t change.Baron Baptiste
If this all sounds like insanity to you, it’s only because the Ego is insane. It’s all just a big drama, based on a big lie and the Ego is the star of the show. It’s time to turn the channel.
Why are you carrying the past around with you all the time? Take the backpack of bricks off your back. It’s hurting you. Just set it down and walk away, you have nothing to fear.
We are practicing with the simple concept of becoming present in order for us to lose the reactivity. To stop listening to that voice, the voice of the Ego. We need to become present so that we might experience joy and awe again, all the time!
There is nothing else more important than to become present.
