The steamy aqua blue pool of the Imperial Geyser looks like a tropical oasis. The unpredictable but frequent eruptions of the Imperial Geyser are sure to impress.
The energetic eruptions make this Hot Spring a very active Fountain Geyser.
Bright colored algae and sintered iron ore deposits along the shoreline of the Imperial Geyser create a melody of color.
Gurgling mud pots sit on the trail side of Imperial Geyser. There are four main mud pots and one quite large one.
Every once in awhile they burp out some mud gases. The smell of sulphur is nascent, but not overwhelming.
You will notice the area surrounding the Imperial Geyser is quite open with new forest regeneration as a result of the 1988 wildfire.
This backcountry geyser is off the beaten path, however, very accessible from the Midway Geyser Basin. While you are there, be sure to check out Spray Geyser, just a short distance away.
The Imperial Geyser is best accessible from the main parking area for the Grand Prismatic Spring. From the parking lot area, you will cross over the Firehole River to join the Faery Creek trail. One-way from the trailhead, the distance from the parking lot to the Imperial Geyser is 3 miles. The terrain is mostly flat and easy for almost any fitness level.
If you plan to hike to Faery Falls, you will be delighted to know the Imperial & Spray Geyser are only 0.5 miles past the Falls. The entire round trip journey is 6 miles, therefore, plan on at least 3 – 4 hours time frame for the entire hike.
