As a waterfall connoisseur, I’ve visited waterfalls all over the globe. However, something about Faery Falls struck a chord in me. There was an outer worldly aura that seemed to permeate the entire atmosphere of this place.
As I approached the pool at the base of the falls, a crow soared like a dark shadow against the cloudy sky. It seemed almost surreal. Gazing up to the plateau, the enlivened water fell in timelessness down to the Faery Creek below. At that moment, I was lost somewhere between the earth and the sky.
The Midway Geyser Basin offers a big punch for those looking to see some of the best sights in Yellowstone National Park. My suggestion, make a half-day for the Midway Geyser Basin. The parking lot at the Grand Prismatic Spring offers the closest parking for Faery Falls, however, you can also find another trailhead off Fountain Flathead Dr.
Your journey to Faery Falls will begin by crossing the Firehole River to join the Grand Prismatic Loop Trail. This will take you to view points for the Opal Pool Fountain Geyser, Turquoise Pool Hot Spring, Excelsior Geyser and of course, the Grand Prismatic Spring.
Continue on the spur trail for Faery Falls, which is 1.6 miles (one way) from the trailhead located at the Grand Prismatic Spring parking area. Pass through the regenerated forest, primarily new growth since the 1988 fires. You might witness some wildlife along the way!
Along the Grand Prismatic Loop trail, we watched this kit fox hunting for a mouse!
Down the Faery Falls spur trail, you may see a chipmunk or two and maybe even catch a glimpse of the elusive yellow-bellied marmot.
Once you arrive at Faery Falls, the trail embarks off to the right. You will continue on for 0.6 miles (partially along the Firehole River) to the Spray and Imperial Geysers. These geysers are quite active, but unpredictable in regard to frequency of eruptions.
You can definitely hike the entire Midway Geyser Basin, including Faery Falls spur trail and backwoods geysers in 3 – 4 hour time period (round-trip). The trail is mostly flat, conducive for all ages and perfect for kids too!
